Before undertaking any tiling project, there are important issues to consider - even before you pick out your materials. If you wish to work around a specific theme, think about what colors or artistic ceramic tile choices fit in with the overall theme. There is a practically infinite field of choices, so let your imagination take off. For example, if laying down bathroom ceramic tile is on the home improvement agenda, multiple shades of aqua, punctuated with hand crafted tropical fish tiles, might set a nice oceanic tone. If sea themes aren't your cup of tea, perhaps the bright, contrasting hues of a desert southwest scheme are more to your liking.

Many newcomers to floor tiling are unsure about what to do when they wish to put down an artistic ceramic tile mural in a room in which tiling already exists. If the existing kitchen or bathroom ceramic tile is in good shape - an even, level surface and no missing or loose pieces - it is fine to begin tiling over it. (If the tiling is especially slick, sand it down first.) If it turns out there is some damage to the floor, or you are just not sure, consult an expert before beginning any project. It's possible you may have to remove the old flooring and put down a new underlayment to assure that your new surface stays in good condition for years to come.
